Situated at the foothills of Trikuta mountain, Katra is the gateway to Vaishno Devi shrine, the second most important temple in India. Katra lies on national highway 1C about 42 km from Jammu. The town serves as base camp for pilgrims on their way to Vaishno Devi which is 13 km uphill. Yatris or pilgrims also have to get their Yatra Parchi (token numbers) at Banganga in Katra. This Yatra Parchi is essential for every pilgrim going to Vaishno Devi Temple.

At an elevation of 2474 ft above mean sea level, the town thrives on the religio-tourism industry. Katra is a shoppers’ paradise. The markets of Katra stock dry fruits, garments and leather goods. It is a good place to buy garments embellished with Kashmiri embroidery. Katra is a shopper’s paradise. You can buy textiles with Kashmiri embroidery, dry fruits, hosiery items and leather goods. Main Bazaar is the best place to buy souvenirs, dry fruits, etc. Kashmiri carpets, namdas, shawls, phernas, silverware, silks, brassware, Pashmina shawls, Cashmere shawls, Cashmere carpets, copperware, wooden furniture, etc. can be bought in Katra. If you are a sports fan, then you can buy good quality cricket bats and baseball bats. Chunri’s, Shawls and Sari offered to Vaishno Devi by devotees can be bought from souvenir shops run by Vaishno Devi Shrine Board.

The best time to visit Katra is between the months of March to October. During this period the weather in Katra remains pleasant. December to March is also good time to visit if you like snow and do not mind the winter chill.

The geographical study of Shrine Vaishno Devi temple and Vaishno devi History, katra People, katra Culture, Katra festivals are referred to as million years. The Mountain Trikuta is mentioned in the Rig Veda being the oldest amongst the four Vedas. In the Puranic period the practice of worshipping Mother Goddess is believed to be started.

The first mention about the Shrine Vaishno Devi is in the epic Mahabharata where Sri Krishna advices Pandavas to mediate upon the Vaishno mata Temple and seek her blessings to win the battles against Kauravas. Arjuna addresses the Vaishno mata Temple as Jambookatak Chityaishu Nityam Sannihitalaye which the meaning of the same is the one who always dwell in the temple on the slope of the mountain in Jamboo. Today it is referred to as Jammu. It is believed that Pandavas where the ones who built the temples at Kol Kandoli and Bhawan in gratitude and reverence to Katra temple. There are five stones structures in the holy cave in a mountain adjacent to the Trikuta Mountain believed to be the five pandavas rock symbols. There's another reference to this historical figure Guru Gobind Singh who visited the place via Purmandal. The Shrine Vaishno Devi is believed to be Holiest of all the Shakipeeths (the abode of the eternal energy of Mother Goddess is resided) since the skull of Mata Sati fell here. Some Katra People believe that her right arm fell here. But few scriptures disagree to these and they say that the right arm of the Mata Sati fell in Gandarbal in Kashmir. But one does find the remains of a human hand, popularly known as Varad Hast the hand that grants boons and blessings in this holy cave of Shrine Vaishno devi temple can be reach by Helicopter to Vaishno Devi and stay at Vaishno Devi Hotels.

It is believed that many years ago a man named Sridhar dreamt about the cave Vaishno mata temple and he discovered the cave in Katra and was a devotee of Mata Vaishno Devi. Sridhar was childless and worshipped little girls. Mata appeared in his dreams and revealed to him about the cave shrine Vaishno devi. Sridhar worshipped at the cave vaishno mata temple. He was blessed with Four sons and since then his descendants worship at the Shrine vaishno devi as pandits. The yatra of Vaishno Mata temple is not complete unless pilgrims visit Bhairon Ka Mandir and it is 2.6 Km away from the Vaishno Mata temple.

Popular belief holds that anybody who walks the trail to the goddess Vaishno Mata temple rarely returns disappointed.
